I am confused. If ACP means automatic colt pistol then why is it in ammunition round and not a pistol?

They are designed for pistols and not revolvers. They are rimless to move through the action of an auto pistol as opposed to a rimmed round meant to be used in a revolver. As someone mentioned a 45acp is marked so as not to be confused with a 45 colt revolver round.
